Managing your stress levels, and learning to give yourself time to provide emotionally intelligent responses, is crucial to becoming someone who can perform under pressure

A quick word to back up Professor Sondhi here: early on in my time in England, well before CDs, iPods or any of the other technology that mysteriously appears on my credit card statement every time my kids take me shopping, we had cassette tapes. As I mentioned earlier, I made myself a tape of messages that affirmed how lucky I was to be at Manchester United, what an incredible opportunity I had and why I needed to make the most of it. Listening to that tape on the way to training or a game, and again on the way back, was a simple thing to do, but the results were appreciable: I’d get to training a calmer, more positive person, ready to take on the world with a smile on my face and a skip in my step.

Whatever your tape is, metaphorically speaking, you need to find it. That’s part of understanding your own EI. As the professor makes clear below, however, it is necessary to extend that understanding beyond yourself and to take steps to welcome the changes you need to make, all the while being grateful for the opportunity to do so.

You need to demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of other people’s feelings by building up empathy towards them. It’s all well and good to understand yourself, but that is only a point of departure for understanding the people with whom you work and communicate. Validating other people’s emotions by rephrasing and restating their feelings is a simple but effective method to use to demonstrate an understanding of how they feel or what they are saying. Use these feelings to show respect for others. Listen to how they feel about your position, and learn to take their feelings into consideration – while some-one’s opinion or contribution might not change a decision or an approach, knowing that they have been heard and considered makes people feel included in the process at hand, and builds up confidence and goodwill as a result. Focusing on listening with empathy rather than judgement, as discussed earlier, means that your effectiveness as a leader will improve overnight. It honestly is that simple.
